Purchasing Intelligence 21.i

As the pandemic continues to affect component availability, the pressure has been eased for Charcroft customers as all of our inventory is held in, and shipped from, the UK.

At the beginning of the pandemic, a significant amount of additional inventory was profiled and put in place in the UK warehouse. The inventory was matched to meet customer orderbooks and forecasts, and reflected our own forecasts of component demand.

As availability is tightening for some components, the Charcroft team is recommending alternatives which can replace parts which are on extended lead-time.

Constant dialogue with customers and suppliers over Microsoft Teams, Skype and Zoom means that we are here to help you to address your purchasing and sourcing challenges.

The recent acquisition of ICW and ClarityCap audio capacitors has seen a high level of activity as we have offered specialist advice to customers in the audio and rail sectors. This has supported customers with delivery from the UK manufacturing facility, and on the development of new designs.

I would be interested to hear your experiences of sourcing components, and you can contact me on Debbie.Rowland@charcroft.com to discuss how we can help you to simplify procurement.

Lead-time trends

Some lead-times over the past few months have shown a dramatic increase but others have remained stable or come in. For surface-mount and axial polymer tantalums, the lead-time has dropped from 20 and 11 weeks to under two weeks. Silver mica and polyester film capacitors have also seen the lead-time shorten.

The story for resistors is mixed. There has been volatility in wirewound axial resistor lead-times, with wirewound current-sense and metal film axial resistor lead-times lengthening. Where lead-times are extending, alternative values or technologies can be recommended to suggest a replacement component.

Metal price trends

With the exception of tantalum concentrate, the price of base and precious metals has seen a steady upswing. For aluminium, copper, and palladium, the rise has been followed by a slight fall. The price of tantalum concentrate has sunk significantly following the peak seen at the end of 2020 and the nickel price has experienced a recent drop. All graphs are guidelines only.

MTM Power supports delivery with increased storage

MTM Power has increased the storage of components to mitigate the risk posed by increases in component lead-times. The increasing shortage of capacity in sea and air containers has also affected the availability of raw materials.

In addition to increasing component storage to 150%, MTM Power is expanding support for the medium- and long-term order process. The power-supply manufacturer will also provide active management, monitoring and controlling to assess the development of the market situation

Exxelia components arrive on Mars

When Rover Perseverance landed on Mars, the six-wheeled robot carried transformers, inductors, and passive components from Exxelia. The components are part of the SuperCam, MEDA and PIXL instruments which are used for measuring and sampling.

SUPERCAM looks for organic compounds in rocks and soils and the Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer (MEDA) measures wind speed, wind direction, temperature, humidity, and atmospheric dust particles on Mars. The Planetary Instrument for X-ray Lithochemistry (PIXL) looks for signs of past microbial life.

Downhole X-Ray inspection with Exxelia

Custom resistor dividers from Exxelia Ohmcraft are being used in downhole X-ray technology to check wells for structural damage or radioactive materials. This process is important before a well is capped off or abandoned.

The X-ray platforms used in downhole drilling enable oil companies to examine the interior and ensure the integrity of the well despite operating in harsh conditions. These conditions can include exposure to high temperature, high pressure, and fluids.

MTM Power supports EN 60950 and EN 62368

The EN 62368-1 standard has superseded EN 60950 as the standard for the Safety Requirements of Audio/Video, Information and Communication Technology Equipment.

MTM power have announced that high-end industrial power supplies will continue to be proved to EN 61010-1, and EN 62358-1 will be applied to products for applications which are unambiguously within the scope of the new standard.

Sensata to acquire Xirgo Technologies

Sensata Technologies has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the telematics and data insight provider, Xirgo Technologies.

The acquisition strengthens Sensata’s position as a data insight provider across transportation and logistics end-markets. The Xirgo CEO will lead the combined Xirgo and Smart & Connected business unit.

Sensata’s Smart & Connected initiative provides modular solutions which collect data from wireless sensors or related vehicle systems information using a connected vehicle area network. The solutions give drivers, maintenance workers and back-office personnel actionable insights through mobile applications, web portals and cloud APIs for integration into other enterprise systems.
